A vague hint: It's educational.
My thing was educational...
But, sadly, wrong.
Whatever is going on, it is disturbingly orderly, in a natural way of course.
Another vague hint: Dave is going in the right direction.
Using croquet balls to trace the underground roots of a tree? That seems vaguely educational. Or vaguely hints at the educational. Or something.

Hard to tell from this one photo, but the roots spread out an extraordinary distance.

I'm not going to quibble; but, just how does the placer of balls know where the roots are? Second, I know Punkinsmom wins, but she had Fermi's and my help, who comes in second, me or Fermi?
